Department of Classics 2022 Orientation Introduction
THIS LINK/PDF WILL BE UPDATED SOON.
Is it possible to study Classics and pursue pre-Health courses of study?
Is Classics an appropriate course of study if I want to go to law school?
Classics and Pre-Law
Classics, Greek, and especially Latin have long been popular choices for students wanting to study law after their undergraduate careers. There are good reasons for why Classics and a Pre-Law track go together well, but they are not necessarily the ones that everyone assumes.
Download the PDF attached to the image below to find out more about Classics and Pre-Law.
What Classics courses are being offered this semester (Fall 2022)?
Each semester the Department of Classics publishes a list of courses of interests for majors and minors—Fall 2022 Courses in Classics and related courses in other departments.
Students with questions about specific courses are invited to contact individual instructors directly for more information.
Some faculty may be able to send preliminary syllabi or syllabi from previous versions of their courses; all faculty can and do answer questions about their courses.
If you need assistance in contacting a faculty member in the Department of Classics, please do not hesitate to contact Ms. Kim Oliphant, our Undergraduate Program Coordinator, for further assistance.
Who can answer my CL/GRK/LAT questions?
I have questions about CL, GRK, LAT courses. Whom do I contact?
We are asking everyone who has questions about Classics, Greek, or Latin courses; advising; or other related matters to contact our Department of Classics Academic Degree Program Coordinator, Ms. Kim Oliphant (kmoliph@emory.edu). She will make sure that you are connected with the people in the department who have the best answers possible. This will probably be Dr. Dickson (Director of Undergraduate Studies), Dr. Blakely (Department Chair), or both, so don’t be surprised to see your email answered by them.

Classics Orientation Advising/Information Sessions for Fall 2022
I’d really like to talk to someone in person. Is that possible?
Yes. We will have two pre-semester drop-in advising/information sessions available in-person or via Zoom with Dr. Katrina Dickson (Director of Undergraduate Studies). Links will be added as soon as sessions are scheduled.
Please read the following before clicking on a session below:
- Sessions are open to all students and it is fine to come in at any point during the session.
- You may attend either in-person or via Zoom (see below for times, locations, and Zoom links).
- If you cannot attend a session, please contact Ms. Oliphant (see "Who can answer my questions?" above).
- Registration is required for security reasons.
- You can help things run more smoothly by doing the following:
- Pre-Register NOW!—Click on the registration link now and register ahead of time, not just before the meeting starts (though if you forget or find out at the last minute, that’s OK!).
- Be patient—Zoom has changed some settings and there may be a few hiccups. You may be in the waiting room for a few minutes at the beginning of the office hour when approvals are happening.
- Sign into Zoom FIRST—Sign in through the Emory Zoom site BEFORE trying to click on the meeting link (open it in a separate browser window or tab in your browser, go to the link above, click on login).
- Have questions ready—Have a list of your questions ready to go so that you don’t forget anything.

Permission Numbers and sitting in on courses during Add/Drop/Swap.
What do I do if I need a permission number for a course?
Permission numbers are required for closed courses (permission only courses and courses that are full). Some courses become permission only during the beginning of the semester portion of Add/Drop/Swap. Some instructors may also offer to overload students into closed classes that are not utilizing the waitlist feature. This is not a universal practice, so do not request an overload and expect it to be granted automatically. If you want to inquire about the possibility of an overload or enrollment in a closed class (note carefully the language used), please do so in the most courteous way possible and understand that you may still get turned down. If a CL, GRK, or LAT instructor says yes, you will need a permission number from Classics and you should have the instructor contact Ms. Oliphant (see below).
If you need a permission number for a course for any reason, please contact Ms. Kim Oliphant (kmoliph@emory.edu) for help after you have obtained permission from the instructor of the course to enroll in it. This is the procedure for all students requiring permission numbers (honors students, students in other schools such as Candler School of Theology or Laney Graduate School, etc.). Please do not contact individual instructors requesting permission to take their classes or permission numbers, contact Ms. Oliphant and explain your need to her, and she will help you with your request.
Is it okay to sit in on courses that I am interested in during Add/Drop/Swap?
Because space is a concern you should check with the instructor to make sure that space is available for you to sit in on classes in which you are interested during the Add/Drop/Swap period. Please arrive in a timely manner and stay for the entire class if you wish to do this.
In-person & online courses in Classics.
What if a class I need/want to take is only listed as being offered online?
Classics, Greek, or Latin courses or course sections that are listed as being offered online will not also be offered in-person. If one of our courses or course sections is only listed as being offered online, that is the only way it will be offered this semester. Most multi-section courses have at least one section that meets only online.
Why do some classes meet both in-person and online?
There are only so many classrooms available and space is tight because of the block schedule that we have been using during the pandemic. As a result, courses that meet for more than 150 minutes will also have online meetings or components. Please pay careful attention to your schedule to be aware of when you are in-person and when you are meeting online via Zoom or expected to do asynchronous work.
What if I get sick or the pandemic gets worse? Contacts.
What happens if I get sick or have to quarantine or the pandemic gets worse?
If you need to quarantine or become ill, plans are in place to ensure that you can continue your courses. Your instructors will have procedures in place to facilitate communication with them in the advent you or they need to quarantine or become ill. If you become ill and have difficulty contacting your Classics, Greek, or Latin instructor, please contact our Department of Classics Academic Degree Program Coordinator, Ms. Kim Oliphant (kmoliph@emory.edu). She will make sure that your professors know what is happening with you and facilitate further communication as needed.
What happens if Emory College of Arts and Sciences switches to online only courses? Is that a possibility?
The current pandemic could require Emory to move to online only learning for the safety of students, faculty, and staff. If this happens, we will try to update this space as quickly as possible with the most accurate information in our possession, but the following web pages should always have the most recent and up-to-date information:
Emory College Forward – Information for the entire University
Emory College of Arts and Sciences – Information specifically pertaining to Emory College
Emory COVID-19 Updates – Information about the COVID-19 pandemic for everyone.
